Cite the book, chapter, and verse which you reference for MLA's parenthetical citation, using a colon or period to separate the chapter and verse. A quotation from the third verse of the second chapter of Genesis, for example, would look like this: (Genesis 2:3).

Check your MLA handbook in order to determine the abbreviations for books of the Bible which have long names. A citation from the 2nd book of Chronicles, for instance, might look like this: (2 Chron. 4:2)

    • 3

Include the version of the Bible in the list of works cited for your text. The Bible's name with its version should be first and italicized, followed by the name of primary translators or editors, and finally ending with the publishing information in the usual MLA format of Place: Name of publisher, year. For example: The Holy Bible: Revised Standard Version (italicized). San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1966.
