How to Cite the Constitution in MLA

If you refer to the United States Constitution in the process of writing a term paper or essay, you should include the Constitution in the reference list at the end of your paper. As with other specific government documents, there is a special way to cite the U.S. Constitution using the Modern Language Association (MLA) format.

Instructions

    • 1

List the title of the document, followed by a comma. For example:

      U.S. Constitution,

    • 2

List the article or amendment number, followed by a comma. Use uppercase Roman numerals for numbers. For example:

      art. IV,

    • 3

List the section you are referring to, followed by a period. For example:

      sec. 4.

    • 4

Arrange the elements of your citation so that they appear in the following order:

U.S. Constitution, art. IV, sec. 4.

    • 5

Alphabetize your reference list entry by the title, because there is no listed author. For example, your entry for the U.S. Constitution would be listed after an entry for a source written by Melanie Thomas and before an entry for a source written by John Veers.
