How to Cite a List of Illustrations in MLA

Modern Language Association (MLA) style is a commonly used method of citation across the humanities. In subjects like English Language and Literature, MLA style allows readers to easily follow your ideas and layout and quickly locate your sources. When it comes to illustrations, MLA has specific guidelines in place to ensure all the necessary information is included and properly cited.

Instructions

    • 1

Include an illustration label and number--e.g., Figure 1, Figure 2--and a caption. List the illustration label and number twice: in the main text of the document and under the illustration itself. Include a title and any explanatory notes in your caption. Number captions consecutively.

    • 2

Use in-text citations. When referring to an illustration, follow MLA in-text citation format. For example, write "(see figure 1)." Do not capitalize.

    • 3

List all illustrations on your references page. For a photograph or work of art, cite the artist's name, title (underlined), individual or institution that owns the image and the date.

    • 4

Follow citation guide for electronic sources. After including the information in Step 4, end the citation with the name of the website (in italics), the medium of publication and the date you accessed it.
