How to Format a Typed Book Report

Frequently assigned by your professor or teacher, book reports are normally short in length and of simple construction. High school versions focus on summarization, while the collegiate focus is a critique. Read the book for content and examine the author's credentials and related writings. Highlight key passages that you might use to illustrate points about the text. Determine the author's purpose and point of view. Examine the quality of writing and see if the author cited the sources properly. Develop your thesis. While the format may differ slightly, every book report includes some basic components.

Instructions

    • 1

Title the report. Include a formal bibliographic citation, your name, date, name of the course and the professor or teacher.

    • 2

Write an opening paragraph. The opening paragraph sets the tone of the book report. Begin by restating the title, the author and the author's credentials. This is also a good place for your thesis. Your thesis is an argument advancing a point of view resulting from reading the book.

    • 3

Write the body. Use the body to summarize and develop your various points about the text. State how the text fits within the professional literature. Note whether the author made and substantiated the intended arguments. Determine if the sources used by the author are appropriate and sufficient to the task.

    • 4

Write the final paragraph. Use this paragraph to state your conclusions and restate the points made in the body.
