Read the book and make notes. To create an accurate book report outline you'll need to know the details of the book. The only way to truly do this is by reading the book at least once. A second read for details is even better as it allows the reader to look for important details that are often missed during the first read through.
List headings. The book can be divided into certain categories of information. The book has people (main characters who do all the action), the book takes place in certain areas and times (setting) and certain important actions occur that are unique to the book (plot). The book also contains an idea that runs throughout (theme). All of these details become the headings. Two more headings should be included--an introduction and a conclusion to facilitate ease of report writing. The introduction will include the book's title and author and what genre the book belongs to. The conclusion will tie the remaining sections all together and end the report.
Answer questions. Under each heading you'll need to put the details that are specific to the book. Under Setting, you'll need to answer the questions of where the book takes place and when. Under plot you'll need to answer the questions of what happens and why. And under main character(s) you'll need to list the character that does most of the action or most of the talking--point of view--and list the supporting characters who are important to the action of the book. Under theme, you'll have tougher questions to answer, such as what motivates the character and is there any type of motivation that is reoccurring? Also list any details that you feel are important to the individual book under the appropriate category.
