How to Do a Book Report in Second Grade

As children progress through school and develop their reading abilities, it is almost inevitable that they will be assigned a book report at some point in their early school years. In fact, most children are assigned book reports as soon as the second grade, if not before then. Second grade book reports are usually short, no more than a few paragraphs at the most and are designed to to encourage reading comprehension and to get kids thinking about the books they read.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a book that is appropriate for your reading level. Ask a librarian or teacher for help. Or you may read a page or two while deciding if this is a good book for you. If you find five or more words per page that you do not know, the book is too hard.

    • 2

Read the book. This is the most important part of any book report project. Without reading the book, you will not be able to complete the other parts of the report.

    • 3

Begin the report by listing the book title, author, publisher and the year it was published. You may also want to list the number of pages in the book.

    • 4

Classify the book into a category. Common categories include mystery, biography, adventure, or historical.

    • 5

Write a summary of the book. Include the major characters, the setting, and the time period when the book takes place. Summarize the plot of the book without revealing every detail of what happens in the book; describe the major obstacles the main character faced and how he overcame them.

    • 6

Discuss what you liked the most and least about the book and why. Talk about what you would have done differently if you were the author, or how you felt about the characters' behavior.

    • 7

Explain what you learned by reading the book. If your report is about a novel, write about what you learned from the major character's experiences. If the book was nonfiction, list three to five new facts that you learned that you thought were interesting.

    • 8

Review the assignment that your teacher provided, and make sure that you included all of the requirements for your book report. Some requirements for a second grade book report might be using vocabulary words in the report, listing a certain number of facts from the story or responding to specific questions about the book.

    • 9

Proofread your spelling and grammar before turning in your report. It might be helpful to have a parent or other adult assist with this step.
