Select words for the spelling list. Use words from textbooks or trade books that your students exhibit difficulty with spelling, or use words that are suggested by your state or school curriculum guide.
Choose words that have some sort of connection for them or that fit into the theme of some of their lessons. For example, if you're focusing on a rainforest theme in your class, select words that pertain to the theme.
Select no more than 10 words for a spelling list. Including too many words can overwhelm children of this age, making it difficult to retain the proper spelling and understanding of each word on the list.
Type the words in a word processing program in a bold font that is 14 point or larger. Write the words in a vertical line with a double space between each word.
Print out the list of words. White is an ideal choice because the words will be clearly visible. However, to add interest and capture the attention of your students, you can also use a bright or pastel colored paper.
