Count with the students up through 10, and have them repeat what you say: Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. When they understand the words, have them count various objects, such as posters, desks, classmates or time on the hour. Help them along if they have trouble. This repetition will help them remember the words and let the vocabulary become natural.
Have the students take out objects from their backpacks. Name the object for them. Tell them to repeat it. When they understand the words, have them hold the items and repeat the words. This creates a verbal and tactile connection with the terms.
Point to various body parts and have the students say the Spanish words for them. If they have trouble, help them with the word. Show excitement with their success to encourage future success.
Have the students perform various acts, such as opening a door, standing up, sitting down, running in place or walking. Have them give the verb for the action as they perform it. This creates an association between the action and the vocabulary.
Use pictorial flashcards to show objects and actions not easily replicated in the classroom, such as animals, cars, swimming and other common activities.
