How to Cite a Memorial

The term "memorial" is typically used to describe a monument that commemorates the memory of a deceased person. If you describe the inscription on a memorial, you may need to cite it as a source. According to Professor Vincent Clark of Johnson Community College in Kansas, Chicago citation style may be adapted to provide a footnoted citation for the inscription on a memorial monument.

Instructions

    • 1

List "plaque," followed by a comma. If the words you are citing are inscribed directly onto the memorial, you may want to list "inscription."

    • 2

List the name of the memorial, followed by a comma.

    • 3

List the name of the city where the memorial is located, followed by a comma.

    • 4

List the state in which the memorial is located, followed by a comma.

    • 5

List the date on which you gathered information at the memorial, followed by a period. List the day first, followed by the month and year. Your complete citation should be arranged in the following format:

Inscription, Joshua Chamberlain Memorial, Bangor, Maine, 11 July 2009.
