How to Cite a USGS Map

When you are writing a term paper in college, you must be sure to cite all sources that you use for information. This includes not only print sources, such as books and articles, but also image-based information sources, such as maps. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a department of the U.S. government responsible for surveying and producing maps. If you use a USGS map as a source for your term paper, follow a few simple steps to format your citation.

  List the name of the organization that issued the map.

  List the title of the map in italics.

  List the medium of publication in brackets and followed by a period.

  List the edition information.
  
  Version 4.

  List the scale of the map.
  
  1:40,000.

  List the name of the series the map comes from.
  
  Northeastern Topographic Series V-1.

  List the place of publication, followed by a colon. For USGS maps, this should appear as follows:
  
  Reston, VA:

  List the name of the publisher, followed by the date.
  
  U.S. Department of the Interior, USGS, 1999.

  Ensure that the finished citation appears in the following format:
