How to Cite Characters in a Film

The Modern Language Association publishes guidelines for the proper citation of a character from a film. To emphasize the performance of a specific actor, begin your citation with the name of the actor instead of the title of the film. It is not necessary to include a parenthetical citation within the text. Simply mention the actor's name and include a reference list entry for the film that begins with the actor's last name.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin your reference list entry with the actor's last and first names. Designate the actor you are citing as a performer in the film. For example, Depp, Johnny, perf.

    • 2

List the title of the film in italics, followed by a period. For example, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

    • 3

List the name of the studio or distributor, followed by a comma.

    • 4

List the year of release and a period.

    • 5
