How to Cite a Film in APA

The American Psychological Association established a set of guidelines for scientific writing in 1929. Despite the name, these guidelines were adopted by many different fields due to the standardization they provided. The APA rules, when applied to film citation, offer a streamlined way of giving credit to the creative minds behind the film and narrowing down the film on the works cited page so that it is not confused with another work of the same name.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the back of the DVD case or pause the film's credit sequence to establish the producer and director's names, year of release, formal movie title, country of origin and the name of the movie studio.

    • 2

Cite the movie using the following format and replace the information with the information pertaining to the film you are referencing. Anything that is in parentheses or brackets should stay as it is in the example.

Example: Producer's Last Name, First Initial (Producer), & Director's Last Name, First Initial (Director). (Year). Movie title [Motion picture]. Country of Origin: Name of Movie Studio.

    • 3

Check to make sure that your film citation looks similar to the following example:

Jacks, J., Daniel, S. (Producers), & Cosmatos, G. (Director). (1993). Tombstone [Motion picture]. United States: Cinergi Productions.

    • 4

Italicize the name of the film, in this case "Tombstone," but leave the rest of the information as it is.
