How to Cite a DVD in APA

The APA (American Psychological Association) publication manual sets specific guidelines for the citation of sources. Proper citation helps ensure that you won't be accused of plagiarism by professors or peers. All sources quoted -- including films on DVD -- should be cited parenthetically within the text. In addition, you must include bibliographic information about the film in the reference list at the end of your paper.

Instructions

    • 1

List the last name of the director and the year of release in parentheses. Separate these elements with a comma. For example:

      (Spielberg, 2009)

    • 2

Position your citation directly after quoting or paraphrasing. For example:

In one film, the main character at one point yells that "the government doesn't even want to know about our lives" (Spielberg, 2009).

    • 3

Format your reference-list entry in the following manner:

Producer's Last Name, First Initial (Producer), & Director's Last Name, First Initial (Director). (Year of Release). Title of Film in Italics [Motion picture]. Country of Origin: Name of Studio.

      For example:

Spielberg, S. (Producer), & Smith, D. (Director). (2009). Last action movie [Motion picture]. United States: Lionsgate Films.

If citing a DVD with limited availability, provide full contact information for the distributor in parentheses instead of simply listing the nation of origin and name of studio.

      For example:

Spielberg, S. (Producer), & Smith, D. (Director). (2009). Last action movie [Motion picture]. (Available from Best Movie Pictures, 613 Elm Street, Portland, ME 04443)
