How to Cite Doctors in APA

American Psychological Association (APA) style is the method of formatting references as a means of making your writing more clear and concise for the reader. It allows for proper credit for resources and references used to obtain the information. In APA citations, professional titles are not included in the reference citation and are not required for in-text citations. The work is cited only under the authors' name, including how to cite a doctor.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the type of resource you are citing. APA citations are broken down by whether or not the resource was printed in a book or journal, published online, from personal contact or from published media, such as videos.

    • 2

Follow the specific citation guidelines listed for the particular type of reference in the current APA style guide. In general, APA follows a who, when, what and where format.

    • 3

Type the doctors' name first. That is the 'who' portion of the citation. Professional titles are not included in the name when citing in APA. The format for the name should be last name, first initial. A second initial can be included if applicable. The name will look like this: Douglas, J.

    • 4

Place the year of the resource in parenthesis following the name. This is the 'when' portion of the citation. Place a period after the closing parenthesis.

    • 5

Type the title of the book, magazine or video next to answer the 'what' portion of the citation. In some instances, such as the title of a professional journal publication, the title will need to be typed in italics. Close this part of the citation with a period.

    • 6

Place the publisher and city of publication for books, website address for Internet references, or the name and address of the distribution company for videos after the title. Close this portion of the citation with a period.

    • 7

Cite the doctor in-text using only the last name followed by a comma, then the year in parenthesis at the end of the sentence in which you mentioned information obtained from the doctor. Alternatively, the doctor can be quoted or referenced in-text by using the name in the sentence directly. For example: According to Douglas, caffeine causes trouble sleeping. (Douglas, 2011).
