How to Cite a Film in a Paper

Written works are not the only sources you need to cite in a paper. When using information from a film, it is important to let others know where it came from. The two most common ways to cite films are the Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA) styles. Although there are similarities between the two, each requires slightly different information.

Instructions

  1. MLA Citation

    • 1

Make note of information about the film, such as the title, director, studio or distributor, and the year of release. Writing this information on an index card will keep it organized and easy to refer to when creating your citation.

    • 2

List the film in your "Works Cited." Write the name of the film first, italicizing it, and then a period. The name of the director comes next, followed by a period. Next is the name of the studio or distributor, followed by a comma and the year the film was released. Lastly, include the medium. If the film was in a theater, write “film.” If you are referring to a film that was released on DVD, VHS or another format, write down which format you used. For example:
Gone With the Wind. Dir. George Cukor. MGM, 1939. DVD.

    • 3

Create an in-text citation when referring to the film in your paper. Unlike other references, films do not require a typical parenthetical citation. Instead, use the full name of the film in the sentence where you refer to any scene, character or saying. Make sure to italicize the film’s name.

    APA Citation

    • 4

Make note of information about the film, such as the title, director, producer, studio or distributor, country of origin and the year of release. Write this information on an index card.

    • 5

List the film in the "References" section at the end of your paper. Write the producer’s last and first names, followed by the director’s last and first names. In parenthesis after each name, note which is the producer and director. The year of release, written in parenthesis, comes next, followed by the film’s title. In brackets, note the medium, such as motion picture, DVD or VHS. Lastly, include the country of origin and the studio or distributor’s name. For example:
Selznick, David (Producer) & Cukor, George (Director). (1939). Gone With the Wind [DVD]. United States: MGM.
