List the sources that you used in your sociology paper in a separate section at the end entitled "References."
List each source alphabetically in the reference section. Do not indent the top lines of each citation, but do indent subsequent lines by three spaces.
Start every citation with the name of the author, followed by a period. Invert the name of the author so that the last name is listed first. Separate the last and first names with a comma. If you are citing multiple works by the same author, list the works in chronological order. Rather than repeating the author's name in each citation, begin the second and all subsequent listings of an author with six hyphens and a period. Only abbreviate the author's name with initials if that is how it was constructed in the text you are citing. Separate each initial with a period and a space.
Include the year of publication and a period after the author's name in your citation. Write the title of the reference in italics and follow it with a period. List the city and state of the reference's publication and follow it with a colon. List the publishing company and a period.
Start the citation with the title of the work if an author is not listed.
List the name of the editor at the beginning of the citation, if you are citing a book with a collection of works that does not credit the author. Include ", Ed." after the name to indicate that he is the editor. If your are citing a book with a collection of authors that does credit authors, maintain the established citing format, but list the editor's name after the title. Separate the title and the editor's name with a comma and the preface "edited by."
List the title of the article you are citing in quotation marks after the name of the author. Italicize the name of the periodical after the article title. Separate the two titles with a colon. List the issue and page numbers, separated with a colon, after the titles.
Use the same ASA format to cite web pages, however, include the date of retrieval and then the URL in parentheses at the end of the reference. Include a period after the parentheses.
