How to Take Psychology Notes

Starting a college psychology class may seem intimidating, but if you practice good study habits you will have a much greater chance of excelling. Taking notes in class is a way to process and internalize what the professor is teaching. A system called Cornell notes can help you learn about the psychological theories and models presented in class, boil them down into key words for later practice and review what you have learned in a way that will reinforce it and improve long-term recall.

Draw a line to divide your page into two sections vertically. The right section should be about twice as wide as the left section. Leave five to seven lines blank at the bottom of the page. This will leave your page divided into three sections: a large area at the upper right, a narrower column at the upper left and a few blank lines at the bottom.

    • 2

Summarize what your professor teaches in the upper right area of the page. Psychology classes generally organize information in terms of psychological theories or models. For each model, pay attention to learn who created it (and when and why), how the theory explains human behavior and what it adds to our understanding of the mind.

    • 3

Write key words and important questions in the column on the left. Make sure to note any special terminology and the names of significant symptoms, psychological disorders, influential psychologists and theoretical models. During later reviews you can cover up the right side of the page and use these keywords and questions to quiz yourself.

    • 4

Summarize each page's content in the bottom area shortly after your psychology class is finished. Try to capture the essence of that section, doing your best to word the information in entirely fresh ways. This review will both reinforce your learning and make later study much easier, as you can read the summaries at the bottom for a quick review.
