How to Cite a Patent in MLA Format

To cite a patent in Modern Language Association style, you must include information about the patent inventors and title, as well as information regarding the patent registry. This includes the issuing country, patent number, and registration date. All of this information must be formatted to specific MLA guidelines for a proper citation.

Instructions

    • 1

List all of the names of the patent inventors or owners. List the inventor's last name first. Follow this with a comma and the inventor's first name. If there are multiple inventors or owners, include an additional comma between each two names, as well as the word "and" between the final two names. Place a period after the final name.

    • 2

Write out the full name of the patent, placed between quotes. Place a period after the patent name, preceding the final quotation mark.

    • 3

Include the issuing country of the patent, as well as the patent number. This is formatted to cite the patent office of the issuing country. For example, a United States patent is formatted as "US Patent 4068879," while a United Kingdom patent would be listed as "UK Patent 4068879."

    • 4

Conclude your citation with the issuing date of the patent, with the day of the month first, followed by the month and year. Include the exact date if it is available. If not, simply list the year that the patent was issued.
