How to Cite a Story in MLA Format

The Modern Language Association gives style, formatting and citation guidelines to literature, language and humanities writers in the "Modern Language Association Handbook," which is currently in its seventh edition. To cite a story in MLA format, you will have to create an in-text citation for your story and an entry for it on your works cited page. An in-text citation tells your reader where the content you are citing is located in the story, and the works cited page gives her publication information about the edition of the story you are using.

Instructions

    • 1

Give the author of the story's last name either in parentheses or in the body of your sentence.

      (King)

Stephen King writes that. . .

    • 2

Give the page number for the part of the story you are quoting or paraphrasing in parentheses. If the author's name also appears in parentheses, do not put a comma between the name and the page number. This completes your in-text citation.

      (35)

      (King 35)

    • 3

Give the author's last name and first name followed by title of the story in quotation marks and the title of the collection in which it appears in italics.

Give publication information for the story, including the place of publication, the name of the publisher and the year of publication.

Put the page numbers the story occupies in the collection and indicate that you have access to a print copy of the story by writing "Print." This completes your works cited entry.
