How to Cite Quotes in MLA Format

Multiple formats exist to identify sources in research papers, essays or other disciplines, such as Chicago style, APA and MLA format. Citing sources allows the author to decrease the chances of plagiarism when writing. The MLA style was created by the Modern Language Association for use in the humanities. The Modern Language Association claims that the style is more simple and concise than other citation styles.

Instructions

    • 1

Write your paper and write down the quote that you want to use. Make sure that the quote you used is in quotation marks.

    • 2

Place the last name of the author you quote in parenthesis at the end of the quotation. For instance, you might write, "MLA format is the most widely used format." (Doe)

    • 3

Add the page number from which you took the quotation after the last name of the author so that it would appear as "MLA format is the most widely used format." (Doe 1)

    • 4

Create your works cited or bibliography page to reference the entire book. Write the last name of the author, then the first name and put a period. Write the title of the book and put a period. Write the city in which the book was published, put a colon, and write the name of the publisher. Put a comma and put the year the book was published. Using our previous example, you may write, "Doe, Jane. Fake Book on Citing Sources. City: Fake Publisher, 2010."

    • 5

Alphabetize each entry in the bibliography by using the author's last name.

    • 6

Review and proofread your citations before submitting your paper or essay.
