Type out the name of the artist with the last name first, followed by a comma and then the first name. Put a period at the end of the artist's name.
Follow with the name of the artwork and then a period. The name should be in italics, while the period should be in standard font.
Include the year the illustration was completed. If there is no record of the date of the composition, put the abbreviated version of "no date" n.d. in place of the year.
Input the location of the original illustration if applicable. For well-known pieces, this is typically a museum. The name of the museum should be in italics, followed by a comma and then the location of the museum in standard text with a period after.
Tab out the second line if needed. If your citation for the illustration runs into a second line, the bottom line should be indented from the top.
Cite photographic reproductions by including the bibliographic information of the book it is located in following the location of the museum. This will include the name of the book in italics followed by a period, the edition of the book followed by a period and the author(s) followed by a period. The location of the publisher comes next, then a colon, the name of the company and a period. The number of pages in the book and the type of book it is, whether print or digital, complete the bibliography and are separated by commas as well.
Alter the citation to accommodate digital images. At the end of the completed citation, put the file type of the digital illustration in place of the location or after it if the original illustration is located in a brick and mortar institution. This is typically a .jpeg or .gif file. If you cannot determine what the file type is, put in "Digital file" in italics.
Complete the in text citation by placing the artists last name inside parenthesis as close to the text as possible without disrupting the sentence.
Make sure your citation resembles this, with the applicable information replaced or removed:
Da Vinci, Leonardo. Mona Lisa. 1503-1506. Louvre, Paris. File type. Title of Publication. Ed. Name of Editor. Publisher's City: Publisher, Date of Publication. Page number.
For this citation, the in-text reference should be (Da Vinci).
