How to Cite Concert Tickets in MLA Format

When writing a research essay for a literature or humanities course, you are often required to format that paper in MLA style. This way of documenting research sources was developed by the Modern Language Association. MLA style offers specific format instructions for in-text citations and a works-cited page. From poems to plays to performances, anything and everything that can be used in a research paper can be put into MLA style. This applies even to a concert. Learn how to take the information on your concert tickets and turn it into a properly formatted MLA citation.

Instructions

    • 1

Put together the citation information you will need. MLA style considers a concert to be a performance and has rules on what information is needed to cite that performance. You will need to know the concert performers, the name of the concert, the site of the performance (including the venue and city), and the date of the concert.

    • 2

Indicate the name of the concert. A works-cited entry for a performance begins with the name of the concert. Underline or italicize this title. Because both methods are acceptable in MLA format, ask your instructor which one is preferred. Put a period after the concert's name.

    • 3

Know the exception for putting the concert title first. If your paper focuses on the performer or group rather than the concert itself, you will place that name first rather than the title of the concert. If listing an individual's name, give the last name first, first name last, separated by a comma. Place a period after the name. Then, follow with the name of the concert, as explained in Step 2.

    • 4

List the name of the performer(s). If you have not done so already (see Step 3), list the name of the performers. If giving an individual's name, list the first name first. Precede the individual's or group's name with the abbreviation "Perf." Put a period at the end of the name.

    • 5

Give the location of the performance. List the name of the theater followed by the name of the city where the theater is located. Separate these elements with a comma and end with a period.

    • 6

Record the date of the concert. Indicate when the concert was given by listing the date, the abbreviation for the month, and then the year (24 Dec. 1999). End the works-cited entry with a period.

    • 7

Create an in-text citation. When using MLA, many research works require an in-text parenthetical citation that encloses in parentheses the author and page number for the reference. Because a concert does not have pagination, you do not need to use a parenthetical citation. Instead, include the important information regarding the performance in the text itself. To accomplish this, list the performer(s) and the name of the concert in the body of your essay.
