How to Cite a Television Interview in MLA Format

The Modern Language Association (MLA) provides guidelines regarding how to document external resources in scholarly works. Known as MLA style, the rules for citation both within a document as well as within a list of works cited are followed by most humanities programs. Updated in 2009, the seventh edition of the *MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers* is the authoritative source regarding MLA style. Many colleges offer online guidelines to MLA as well. However, if the citation examples do not end with the medium (such as "Television" or "Web" or "Print"), the website has not been updated to the rules of the seventh edition.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the following information: interviewee's name, television show's title, title of the interview segment, interviewer's name, network on which the show aired, television station's local call letters and city and the date the interview was aired.

Don't worry about format at this point. Focus on ensuring that you have all of the necessary information.

    • 2

Arrange the information into the following order:

Interviewee last name, Interviewee first name. "Segment Title." Television show's title. Network. Call Letters, City: Day Mon. Year. Television.

If you do not know the segment title, or if the show did not have one, substitute that section with "Interview by Interviewer name" or simply "Interview." Do not add quotes to either of those options.

Display the date with the month abbreviated. For example, 07/24/2011 would be written as "24 Jul. 2011." (without the quotes).

    • 3

Format the citation. Television shows should be in italics. Segment titles, if used, should be in quotes. All punctuation should have one space after it.

    • 4

Place into your works cited list, alphabetically by first word in the citation. If the information wraps to two lines, indent the second line by five spaces. The best way to indent is to set the ruler on your document to do a hanging indent five spaces from the margin.
