How to Cite a Speech in MLA Format

You may be in the process of writing an academic paper or are planning to write one. If you attend a speech and the speaker says something you want to quote in your paper, then you need to know proper MLA formatting in order to correctly cite the source of your quote. MLA stands for the Modern Language Association, and the MLA style is one way with which you can format your reference. There are other styles, too, such as the Associated Press or AP style.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the name of the author of the speech in the text of your paper, which could be a school essay, for example. This properly attributes the information in your text, whether it's a direct quotation or a paraphrasing of the information presented in the speech.

    • 2

Add a Works Cited page to your essay. The Works Cited page is where you list all of the references you used to collect the information presented in your paper.

    • 3

List the entry for the speech in MLA style on the Works Cited page. The correct MLA style is to list the speaker's last name followed by a comma, which is then followed by the first name and a period.

    • 4

Add the title of the speech in quotation marks if the speech has a title.

    • 5

Follow the title with the name of the organization that hosted the speech, followed by the location and a period.

    • 6

Add the date of the speech, followed by a period. For example: Speaker, John. "How to Give Speeches." The Conference of Speeches. College of Speeches. Collegetown, Indiana. 13 December 2010.
