How to Cite a Transcribed Speech in MLA

The Modern Language Association of America (MLA) was founded in 1883. The MLA publishes the "MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing" and the "MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers." These two books provide students and other academic writers with advice and guidelines for writing scholarly papers. Among the topics covered in the "MLA Style Manual" are instructions on how to cite transcribed speeches.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a parenthetical citation within the body of the text. To do this, type the speaker's name and the title of the speech in parentheses.

    • 2

Include a full citation in the List of Works Cited at the end of your paper. To do this, first type the speaker's name.

    • 3

Follow the speaker's name with the title of the speech in quotation marks. If the speech does not have a title, give a one- or two-word description of the type of speech it was (guest lecture, presentation, etc.).

    • 4

Type the name of the organization that put on the meeting where the speech was given, followed by the name of the meeting. (Example: National Association of Speech Makers, 25th Annual Convention.)

    • 5

Type the name of the city and state where the speech was given.

    • 6

Type the date of the speech.
