How to Cite a Student Handbook in MLA Format

A student handbook is a code of conduct and set of expectations for students at a given institution. If you quote or paraphrase from a student handbook in the course of writing your paper, you must cite it parenthetically within the text and must also include a full bibliographic entry in your works-cited page. If you are adhering to citation guidelines set by the Modern Language Association (MLA), arrange your citation for a student handbook as you would for a pamphlet or other publication intended for limited circulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the title of the handbook and the page number within parentheses. The title should appear in italics. For example:

      (Chicago High Student Handbook 36)

    • 2

Cite the handbook within the text directly after quoting or paraphrasing. For example:

One school's handbook admonishes students to "avoid bringing weapons within 500 feet of the school property upon pain of expulsion" (Chicago High Student Handbook 36).

If you mention the title of the handbook within the text, omit it from your parenthetical citation. For example:

The Chicago High Student Handbook admonishes students to "avoid bringing weapons within 500 feet of the school property upon pain of expulsion" (36).

    • 3

Format your works-cited page entry in the following format:

Title (in italics). City, State of publication: Institution, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

      For example:

Chicago High Student Handbook. Chicago, IL: Chicago High School, 2008. Print.
