How to Cite a Lab Manual in MLA Format

While writers in the natural and social sciences tend to use APA rather than MLA formatting when citing primary and secondary sources, some college instructors may prefer to teach students only MLA style. Whatever the reason, if you need to cite a lab manual according to MLA guidelines, you will have to create both an in-text citation and a works-cited entry. The in-text citation shows your reader what part of the lab manual's text you are citing, while the works-cited entry gives your reader publication information about the manual.

Instructions

  1. In-Text Citation

    • 1

Give the manual author's last name. Present it either in the body of your sentence or in parentheses after your sentence. For example:

      Leith asks users

      or

      Users should (Leith)

    • 2

Give the page number or numbers in the manual you are citing.

      Leith asks users (33-4)

      or

      Users should (Leith 33-4)

    • 3

Place quotation marks around any text you take directly from the manual.

Leith writes that the "computerized mice serve several functions" (33-4).

    Works-Cited Entry

    • 4

Write the manual author's last and first name.

      Leith, Charles.

    • 5

Write the title of the manual in italics.

      Leith, Charles. Basic Psychology.

    • 6

Give the following information related to the lab manual's publication: the place of publication, the name of the publisher and the year of publication.

Leith, Charles. Basic Psychology. Marquette, MI: Northern Michigan UP, 2004.

    • 7

Write "Print" to specify that you are citing a print source.
