How to Cite a Work From a Collection of Works

Citing works published within larger works can be confusing because there is so much bibliographic information to convey. However, both the Modern Language Association and the American Psychological Association offer clear guidelines for the proper citation of works published within larger works. APA style is most often used in the sciences, while MLA style is most often used in the humanities. Clarify which style your professor expects you to use before beginning your assignment.

Instructions

  1. APA Style

    • 1

Arrange bibliographic information in your works-cited page in the following order:

Author's Last Name, First Initial. (Year of Publication). Title of work. In editor's first initial, last name (Ed.), Title of collection in italics (page numbers). City: Publisher.

      For example:

O'Brien, J. (2009). Finding educational reform in African villages. In J. O'Flaherty (Ed.), Education Gears Up (pp. 145-208). Boston: BU Press.

    • 2

Cite parenthetically within your paper each time you quote or paraphrase from a source. When using APA style, include the following information:

(Author's last name, year, page number)

      For example:

      (O'Brien, 2009, p. 192)

    • 3

Capitalize only the first letters of the titles of works and collections, as well as any proper nouns. Use the notation "p." before citing a single page number, and the notation "pp." before listing multiple page numbers. When citing within the text, separate bibliographic elements with commas.

    MLA Style

Arrange bibliographic information in your works-cited page in the following order:

Author's last name, first name. "Title of Work." Title of Collection in Italics. Ed. Editor's first and last name. City: Publisher, Year. Pages. Medium of Publication.

      For example:

O'Brien, Jonathan. "Finding Educational Reform in African Villages." Education Gears Up. Ed. J. O'Flaherty. Boston: BU Press, 2009. 145-208. Print.

    • 5

Include parenthetical citations within your paper each time you quote or paraphrase from a source, and provide the following information:

      (Author's last name page number)

      For example:

      (O'Brien 192)

    • 6

Capitalize the first letters of all words in titles, other than common articles such as "a," "an," "the," "and" and "of." The titles of less significant works, such as those anthologized in larger collections, should appear in quotation marks. Do not separate bibliographic elements with commas when citing within the text. Do not use "p." or "pp." before listing page numbers.
