How to Cite Information From an Encyclopedia

Writing research papers requires knowing how to cite sources in the correct way for the format you are using. MLA and APA formats are generally the most used formats for writing college papers. Encyclopedia references in particular require careful citation since you have to cite the volume and the name of the encyclopedia along with other normal information on a citation page. You also have to consider the method of quoting inside the text of your paper and listing the encyclopedia as a reference on your bibliography or works cited page.

Instructions

  1. MLA Format

    • 1

Paraphrase or directly quote the information in your paper. Follow the quote with the volume number, a colon and the page number or numbers you used. Put a dash between the page numbers if you used more than one page for your information. Put parenthesis around the citation. For example, a citation would look like this (12: 13-16) to say that you found the information in volume 12 of the encyclopedia on pages 13-16.

    • 2

Cite the quote by putting the name of the article in quotes, followed by the page number or numbers used, if your encyclopedia does not come in volume format, . Put the citation in parenthesis, making sure your period or other punctuation comes after the parenthesis. For example, a citation would look like this ("Properties of Silver" 8) to show you found the information in that article on page 8.

    • 3

Write out the name of the article in quotes with a period at the end to start your Works Cited Page reference. List the name of the encyclopedia after the article title in italics. Follow the name with a period. Write the edition used (i.e. 3rd Ed.), the year it was published followed by a period and end with the word "Print" followed by a period so your professor will know the encyclopedia is a book. Put the volume number with a colon and page numbers after the edition if your encyclopedia comes in volumes.

    APA Format

    • 4

Follow your citation with the author's name (capitalized), a comma, the year published followed with a comma and the page number where you found your information. Write the page number as p. 199. Put parenthesis around the citation.

    • 5

Begin your quote with "According to the Encyclopedia of... " if you do not have an author name to reference. Follow your "According to" statement with the year the encyclopedia was published in parenthesis. End your quote with the page number in parenthesis, following the format for page numbers as listed above.

    • 6

Begin your reference in your bibliography by typing the name of the author of the encyclopedia, last name first, if an author's name is available. If the author's name is not available, start with the name of the article used followed by a period. Type "In" followed by the name of the Encyclopedia in italics with a period at the end.

    • 7

Type "Vol." followed by the volume number and a comma. Put the page numbers used after the comma, typing pp. and the page numbers for multiple pages. Put parenthesis around the volume citation and a period afterward. Type the city of publication followed by a colon. List the name of the company that produces the encyclopedia with a period at the end.
