How to Cite an Electronic Encyclopedia

Properly citing every source is essential when writing a paper or essay. Online resources are becoming more prominent, and citing them is just as important as citing a book or text to avoid plagiarism. Citing an electronic encyclopedia is a simple task that anyone writing a paper can accomplish.

Instructions

    • 1

Make an in-text citation after the text that is cited. It should look like this: (Last Name, Pages)

    • 2

Create a footnote after the text cited. You can do this in most word processing programs by looking at the program's top bar, going to its "format" tab and clicking "footnote."

    • 3

Fill in the footnote information at the bottom of the paper or essay's page as such:

First Name, Last Name. "Article Title." Name of of Encyclopedia (italicized), date published. Hyperlink. Accessed on date.

    • 4

Transfer the footnote information at the bottom of the page to a "Works Cited" list at the end of your paper or essay. The format for Works Cited differs from the footnote format, however. List the Works Cited electronic encyclopedia citation as such:

Last Name, First Name. "Article Title." Name of of Encyclopedia (italicized), date published. Hyperlink. Accessed on date.
