How to Cite an Ebook in a Works Cited Page

Within the academic arena, citations are used to recognize and give credit to bodies of work and materials that are not our own. In order to properly acknowledge sources, we are required to adhere to an established citation format. Generally, the most widely used citation within psychology, social sciences, education and business is the American Psychological Association (APA) format. Correctly citing an ebook using the APA format requires following the appropriate guidelines.

Instructions

  1. Citing an Ebook Using APA Format

    • 1

Open Microsoft Word and create a new document titled References. Choose Times New Roman size 12 as your font, center the title and double-space the document. According to Purdue University's Online Writing Lab, reference list entries should be indented one-half inch from the left margin and alphabetized by the last name of the first author of each work.

    • 2

Identify the source or publisher of the ebook that you are citing. For example, it may be through NetLibrary.com or the library database of an educational institution. Library databases that have chapters from books often give the name of the book’s publisher and the author within the description of the chapter in the database. If the author or publisher names are unavailable, such data can be absent from your citation.

    • 3

Type the author's last name, followed by a comma, followed by the author's first initial and a period. Enter the year the ebook was published (in parenthesis) and then type a period. For example: Spinello, S. (2010).

    • 4

Type the title of the ebook (in italics) followed by a period, then the name of the city where the ebook was published, followed by a coma plus the two-letter postal abbreviation for the state in which the book was published. Enter a colon (:) after the postal abbreviation and add the name of the publisher plus a period.

    • 5

Type “Retrieved from” (less the quotation marks), followed by the complete website of the ebook’s homepage.

      For example:
Spinello, Serena. (2010). How to Cite an Ebook in a Works Cited Page. New York, NY: Demand Studios. Retrieved from Project Demand Media: http://www.demandmedia.org/etext/1112

Citing a chapter of an ebook will be slightly different, and will appear as follows:
Quina, K., & Kanarian, M A. (1988). Continuing education. In R. Shepard & M. Herlong (Eds.), Teaching a psychology of people: Resources for gender and sociocultural awareness (pp. 200-208). Washington, DC: American Psychological Association. Retrieved from http://www.apa.org
