How to Do a Works Cited Page for MLA Reports

MLA style is employed primarily in the humanities, according to the Modern Language Association. MLA style helps organize scholarly and research reports. A primary purpose of the MLA format is documenting the sources of information you include in your paper. You are expected to do this in the text of your document as needed. Each in-text citation should correspond to a listing in your MLA "Works Cited" page.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your Works Cited page at the end of your paper on a new page. The Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL) advises not to italicize or put quotes around the words Works Cited. Center them at the top of the page.

    • 2

List entries in alphabetical order with last names first. Treat names as follows, according to Purdue's OWL.

      Jones, Davey

      Johnson, Marc A.

      Johnson, Marc Anthony

Do not include titles or degrees with a person's name on your Works Cited page.

    • 3

Use three hyphens for each entry in your Works Cited page by the same author after the first. For works with no author, Purdue's OWL notes that you must alphabetize by the source's title.

Follow the examples below, adapted from Purdue's OWL.
