MLA Standards for a Works Cited Page

There are a few different formats for writing papers, essays, reports or similar works. MLA format, or Modern Language Association format, is one of them. When the paper is complete, citing the sources of information on a works cited page gives credit to those sources and is an important part of the report.
  1. Page Appearance

    • An MLA works cited page is on a separate page from the actual paper. According to the Purdue Online Writing Lab, the works cited page is titled "works cited" rather than bibliography, and is centered on the page. The title of the page is never quoted or italicized. Single-space within one source and indent lines after the first line. Double-space between two different sources on the page.

    Author Names

    • Author names are always written with the last name, a comma and then the first name. The works cited page has the author names first, listed in alphabetical order. If there is more than one author, their names are listed in alphabetical order. If there are two sources by the same author, list the sources according to the title of the reference. Put a period after the author name.

    Names of Works

    • MLA requires italics for titles of longer works such as books. If the title is a short work, such as a poem or short article, put the title in quotation marks instead. MLA format does not underline the titles of the sources. A period is placed after the title.

    Author Titles

    • According to Are Search Guide, author titles are not put in the works cited page. For example, if an author has a Ph.D. or a similar title, ignore the title. The only exception is a designation between two individuals, such as the designation of junior, or Jr., versus senior, or Sr. If the name has a Jr., Sr. or roman numeral, put the designation. If it is career-related, ignore the designation.

    No Author Works

    • Any source without a known author would start with the title of the work. For example, an anonymous poem without a listed author would start with the poem title rather than the author name. It is still placed in alphabetical order with the authors.

    Publishers

    • Add the publisher information. Put the place of the publisher followed by a colon and then the publisher name, a comma and the date of publication followed by a period. Purdue Online Writing Lab states that after the publication information, the medium of the publication is mentioned, such as "print" for printed books. Follow the medium with a period.

    Online Sources

    • Online sources are similar to book sources, but sometimes information is not fully available online. For example, it might not have author name or publisher information. Fill in the information in the same order, starting with author if it is available. Put the title of the online article followed by a period and then put the title of the website and a period. Article titles are put in quotes while the website is italicized. If there are version numbers, these go after the website title. Publisher information follows with a period after the publisher information and any page numbers if they are listed. Put the date the website was accessed such as 4 Oct. 2010 and then put the URL address.
