MLA Works Cited Format for a Film

The Modern Language Association (MLA) style guide is a format used widely by college students to format a paper's sources. Sources used for research in an MLA-formatted paper are cited in the paper as well as in a separate document at the end of the paper called a "Works Cited" page.
  1. Cite the Film

    • Start with the name of the film, followed by a period. The name of the film should be in italics.

    Cite the Director

    • After citing the name of the film, cite the name of the director by writing "Dir." Then write the director or directors' name. Start with the director's first name, and end the section with a period.

    Cite the Performers

    • Next, cite the names of all notable performers starting with writing "Perf." List all notable performers, first name first, and separate them with commas.

    Distributor and Release Date

    • Next, cite the film's distributor and the year it was released. Name the film's distributor, add a comma, and add the year that the film was distributed, followed by a period.

    Example

    • Your citation should look similar to as follows:

Name of Film. Dir. John Doe. Perf. Jane Doe, John Smith, and Jane Smith. Film Distributor, 1985. Film.

    Emphasis

    • If you wish to emphasize a director or actor's performance in the film, you can start the citation with the director or actor's name, followed by the film. In this case, the director or actor's name should start with the last name, followed by a comma, and then their first name. After the name, you should write "dir." It should look as follows:

Smith, John, dir. Name of Film. Film Distributor, 1985. Film.
