According to MLA guidelines, a Works Cited page identifies all of the sources used in a research paper. This source listing provides essential authorship and publication information regarding each source.
An MLA-formatted source listing includes information on each source's author or authors, complete title, editor or translator, edition, volume and series, as well as publisher and place and date of publication.
Source listings may be titled as "Works Cited" or "Literature Cited," "Works Consulted" or "References." These listings should be alphabetized and provided on separate pages at the end of the paper.
According to MLA guidelines, sources may also be listed in a Bibliography, which also identifies sources not directly cited in the paper, or in an Annotated Bibliography, which includes a brief summary of each source.
While source listings need to include author, title and publication information for both print and electronic sources, MLA guidelines further require electronic publication and access information for electronic sources.
