MLA Works Cited Rules

A works cited list is used to cite resources in the style of the Modern Language Academy (MLA) stylebook. The works cited list is included in a document to recognize all sources of information that contributed to the writer's research paper, book or other work. It begins with the working bibliography list used by the writer throughout the project, and is transformed to the works cited list once the document is complete.
  1. Format

    • Include the works cited list immediately at the end of your document, beginning on a separate page. Create 1-inch margins on the top, bottom and sides. Arrange the entries in alphabetical order beginning with the author's last name. Use the title of the work if the author's name is unknown. Use a hanging indent for each entry, with double spacing.

    Parenthetical Citation

    • Include parenthetical citations next to the text for which you are including a reference. Include the author and the page number you are using as a resource. Use notes to provide additional explanations or comments. Create a note by first including an Arabic superscript numeral next to the resource. Begin the note on the same page or the Notes page, with the matching superscript numeral used in the text, and enter your comment or additional source.

    Entries

    • Format the entries in the works cited list based on the source type. The three essential elements in an entry are the author's name, the title of the work and whether it is an article, book or other publication, and the publication information.

    Entry Detail

    • Match the works cited list to information that was contained in the parenthetical citation. Provide sufficient information to allow the reader to locate the source with ease. Include the series, volume or issue numbers for journals. Include the database or website for an electronic source. Include other details such as the editor, relevant page numbers, edition and other details based on the source being used. Refer to the MLA handbook for specific rules and how to format the nontraditional sources.
