MLA Works Cited Format for Books

The Modern Language Association has a distinct citation style favored by humanities departments. Papers done in MLA style have works cited sections at the end, which list every item cited within the text. How books are formatted in the work cited depends on the type of book and number of authors. All citations will require publication information, which can be found on or near your book's title page.
  1. Single Author Book Citation

    • Standard books by single authors receive the simplest format: Author's Last Name, First Name. Title in Italics. Location of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium.

In practice, the citation style would look like this: Styron, William. Sophie's Choice. New York: Vintage International, 1992. Print.

The title, "Sophie's Choice," should be italicized in the works cited.

    Anthology Section

    • To cite a section of an anthology by multiple authors, use the following format: Author's Last Name, First Name. "Section Title." Anthology Title in Italics. Ed. First and Last Name of Editor. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. First Page Piece Begins On - Last Page. Medium.

The following example, provided by Indiana University, shows the citation in practice: Lazard, Naomi. "In Answer to Your Query." The Norton Book of Light Verse. Ed. Russell Baker. New York: Norton, 1986. 52-53. Print.

The title, "The Norton Book of Light Verse" should be italicized in the works cited.

    Multiple Authors

    • Books with multiple authors are cited the same way as standard books, with the exception of how the author names are handled. The first author is listed "Last Name, First Name." Every subsequent author is listed "First Name Last Name." If the book has more than three authors, you can write out each author's name. Simply place "and" before the last author's name for clarity. Alternatively, you can write "et al" after the first author's name, which is Latin for "and others."

Purdue University provides the following example for two authors: Gillespie, Paula, and Neal Lerner. The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Peer Tutoring. Boston: Allyn, 2000. Print.

Purdue University's example for multiple authors: Wysocki, Anne Frances, et al. Writing New Media: Theory and Applications for Expanding the Teaching of Composition. Logan, UT: Utah State UP, 2004. Print.

Book titles should be italicized here as well.

    Bible

    • To cite the Bible, follow this format: Title of Bible in Italics. Editor. City of Publication: Publisher, Date of Publication. Medium.

This example, from Purdue University, shows a sample citation: The New Jerusalem Bible. Ed. Susan Jones. New York: Doubleday, 1985. Print.

"The New Jerusalem Bible" should be italicized.
