Architecture Colleges

Architecture colleges offer a practical learning curriculum for students aspiring to become professionals in the field. Colleges that include the architecture major often provide standard concentrations in the history of architecture and community planning. On the other hand, most campuses today also include concentrations in building technology; these campuses tend to offer degree programs in environmental and sustainable design. Architecture schools generally offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs and can be found throughout the United States.
  1. Pacific Region

    • Architecture colleges on the west coast offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the major. The Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, is a member of the College of Environmental Design. The department offers a bachelor of arts degree and six additional minor concentrations, including coursework in sustainable design. The University of Oregon offers a major in Portland Architecture, which allows students to focus their studies on one particular city; students complete elective coursework in design methods, environmental systems and professional ethics. The doctorate program in the built environment at the University of Washington offers three specializations, including sustainable systems, computational design and history and theory.

    West and Mountainous Divisions

    • The College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, or CALA, at the University of Arizona offers both an undergraduate and post-professional degree program. The bachelor's degree is a five-year professional program in which students complete foundational coursework, three years of professional core courses and a capstone project. The college also offers a master's degree in landscape architecture, planning and preservation studies. The University of Colorado program in architecture and planning offers primarily graduate programs and continuing education. The University of Idaho offers five specializations, including interior design and virtual technology. Architecture colleges of this region also include Montana State University and University of Utah.

    The Midwest

    • Each of the 12 states of the Midwest provides college-level architecture training. Schools within Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Ohio offer a master of landscape architecture, or MLA, degree. Architecture colleges that do not offer an MLA often provide a master's degree program in architecture or a master of urban planning and design. Among the best doctoral programs in architecture are those at the University of Illinois and the University of Michigan.

    New England and Middle Atlantic

    • In the northeast, Connecticut College offers an undergraduate degree program in which students combine coursework in art history with classes in the major to gain a comprehensive view of how architecture has affected culture and society. The University of Maine at Augusta offers a bachelor's of art in architecture. The Boston Architectural College, or BAC, offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. At Keene State College in New Hampshire, students complete courses in sustainable design and technology for a bachelor of science degree. The Pratt Institute in New York is a comprehensive program in which students may choose from among eight specializations; in addition to architecture, the school offers a concentration in construction management. Top doctoral programs in the region include those at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Columbia University in New York City.

    Dual and Concurrent Degree Programs

    • Most colleges on this list offer a dual degree program in architecture and another specialization. From each region, these are the colleges that offer the best programs in the country. Students at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, may elect to complete a M.Arch and MLA, master of landscape architecture, in building and site design or a M.Arch and master of city and regional planning, or MCP, degree. At the University of Arizona, students may complete a B.Arch and master of science in planning or a M.S./MBA in planning. The Taubman College at the University of Michigan offers dual degree programs in architecture, planning and urban design. Finally, the New Jersey School of Architecture offers a specialized program in infrastructure planning, civil engineering, management and business administration; students can select any combination of bachelor's and master's degree programs.
