How to Cite a Film in a Research Paper

When writing a research paper, you don’t have to feel limited to using forms of printed media as your sources. You can expand your list of research materials to include movies, whether they were released in theaters or in a different format. When writing a research paper that involves references to films, you must acknowledge each film on your works cited page.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the title of the film. Italicize the title.

    • 2

Type “Dir.” Follow this abbreviation with the name of the film’s director. If you want to acknowledge a relevant actor, type “Perf.” Afterward, insert the name of the actor. For example, “Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Dir. Mel Brooks. Perf. Cary Elwes.”

    • 3

Cite the name of the distributor. Follow this with a comma and the year of production. For example, “Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Dir. Mel Brooks. Twentieth Century Fox, 1993.” A film can have multiple distributors over time, so be sure that you cite the correct one.

    • 4

Acknowledge the format of the film. For example, you can type “Theatrical,” “DVD,” or “Video Cassette.”
