How to Cite a DVD in a Research Paper

Citing a DVD in a paper or research is just as important as citation of a book or periodical material. Specific rules must be followed to cite a DVD in different formats. The two most commonly used citation formats are APA (American Psychological Association) and MLA (Modern Language Association). Each citation style has its own format for DVDs, but luckily they are very easy to understand. While APA style is usually for social sciences papers and MLA for humanities papers, check with your professor to see which style is required.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite in APA format by listing the producer, the director, the year the movie was released, the title followed by [Motion picture], the country it was released in and the production studio. For example: Spielberg, S. (Producer), & Abrams, J.J. (Director). (2011). Super 8 [Motion picture]. United States: Paramount Pictures.

    • 2

Cite in-text citations in APA style in two ways. Either cite the producer, director and release date in parentheses or cite the title of the movie in the text of the paper and put the year of release in parentheses. For example: (Spielberg & Abrams, 2011) or Super 8 is a science fiction movie. (2011).

    • 3

Cite in-text in MLA by using the title of the movie directly in the text of the paper. It can be helpful to also include the producer's name so readers know exactly what you are referencing. For example: Steven Spielberg's sci-fi movie "Super 8" was a summer smash.

    • 4

Cite the DVD on the MLA works cited page as the movie title, the director, the distributor, the release date and the medium. For example: Super 8. Dir. J.J. Abrams. Paramount Pictures, 2011. DVD.
