How to Cite an Entire Paragraph in a Research Paper

When you write a research paper for a class in high school or college, it is very important to cite any work that is not your original work. This may come in the form of quotes as well as general ideas taken directly from another author. When taking an entire paragraph from another text there are several techniques used to cite the author and the work correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Look up the information of the original text. You will need the page number which the paragraph is on, author name, book title, book publisher, date of publication and publishing house.

    • 2

Place the paragraph within your text. In MLA (Modern Language Association) style, a quote longer than three lines on the page should be set off from the rest of the text by beginning on a new line. The whole quote should also be indented one-inch from the margin of the body text of the paper. If the paragraph is short, you may include it in the body of the text within quotation marks.

    • 3

Cite the paragraph. Provide the last name of the author and the page number in parenthesis at the end of the quote. If you state the author's name in the sentence leading into the quote, you only need to provide the page number in the parenthesis.

    • 4

Include the citation information as a footnote instead of at the end of the quoted paragraph. In your word processing software, choose to insert a footnote from the "Insert" tab. If this option is not available, place a superscript at the end of the quote. Then, create the footnote that corresponds to that number. Always place citation information in the bottom and not the top footnote.

    • 5

Write the publication information in the following order in the footnote:

Author(s), book or publication name, publisher, publication date, page number(s).

    • 6

Include all the footnote information again in your bibliography in alphabetical order with other citation sources. A "Works Cited" page is required for all MLA style research papers; this is a complete list of all the works consulted to write the paper, including works already referenced in footnotes.
