How to Receive a Degree or Credits Toward a Degree for Work Experience & Other Training

Most learning happens outside of the classroom. Thankfully many colleges and universities recognize this and are willing to work with students who have obtained education and training in real-life situations.

When researching a college or university, you should consider whether the institution offers credit for life learning, as well as the program or degree you are interested in obtaining. Contact the institution of higher learning from which you are trying to obtain the credits. Ask for information on earning credit for life and work experience and ask the admissions representative about the guidelines for portfolio evaluation. It's likely that you will be directed to a website. Make special note of important dates and make an appointment to meet with an academic adviser well in advance of the deadline. Allow yourself enough time to compile your documents before meeting with the adviser.

List every educational experience you have had in and outside of a classroom. Include professional training, licenses, military service and coursework that was earned at non-transferable institutions. Also eligible for credit by examination are the CLEP, DANTES and AP tests, according to the American Council on Education (ACE). Include every educational experience, no matter how insignificant it may seem. You might not submit all of the educational experiences on your list but it is good to attempt an exhaustive list.

    • 3

Gather all documentation of classes and training you have attended or completed. Include all certificates, performance reports and licenses. Obtain letters from superiors regarding work ethic, performance and on-the-job training. Any piece of documentation showing training or education may be helpful.

Read the school's catalog. Determine the required courses for your desired degree. Familiarize yourself not only with the course names, but the course descriptions and objectives. Compare your knowledge and experience with the learning objectives of the specific courses. Organizing your documents and presenting your request for credits in a clear and concise way is vital.

Meet with an academic adviser. Bring all pertinent documents, a list of any questions you have and the school catalog. Be prepared to clarify, expound on and defend your position.
