How to Transfer Credits for Life Experience

Life experience is one way to earn credit toward your college degree. You may be surprised to find you can qualify for up to 30 credits (at most colleges or universities) by using the knowledge you already have.

Many colleges and universities are willing to award college credit provided you pass an examination or give proof (through valid documentation) of your knowledge. Speak with a representative at your school or place or employment to obtain specific details, as these could vary from place to place.

Instructions

Research and review the criteria for the class you wish to take. You can find this information on your college's website or information brochure. Check with a college adviser if you are unsure whether your life experience meets the criteria for the class.

    • 2

Apply for a transfer of life experience credit. Check with your college or university to find out the specific procedure. Two common ways to transfer life credit are the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) or submitting required documentation (license, certificate or resume) to the head of the department for the class you wish to obtain credits for.

    • 3

Contact a CLEP test center near you to register for the test of your choice. You will need to fill out a registration for and pay a $77 fee (as of December 2010). You will be given a testing appointment. You will need to bring two forms of identification, your registration form, the fee and a pencil on the test date.

    • 4

Prepare your resume and obtain copies of all certificates, licenses or other relevant documentation of your life experience. Present this information to the head of the department for the class or classes for which you wish to obtain college credit.
