How to Focus in Class

Focusing during class is imperative for remembering essential information, passing exams and getting good grades. But long lectures on complicated subjects make it easy to lose yourself in the occasional daydream. Losing yourself in your thoughts and letting outside distractions occupy your attention can have serious ramifications on your academic career, making it more difficult to keep up with complex material. If you want to maintain your focus in class, manage your learning environment to contain as few distractions as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in the front of the class. By putting yourself in the spotlight, you will force yourself to pay attention, primarily because your teacher will notice if you don't. Find a seat in the first few rows toward the middle where you have a clear view of the board. Sitting in the front of the class also helps you hear better and stay more engaged because of your proximity to the teacher.

    • 2

Remove distractions. Leave your cell phone and laptop at home or turned off in your bag. Having mobile devices within reach just tempts you to check your email or play games online. If you have a tendency to chitchat with certain classmates, sit apart to prevent yourself from talking. Removing all outside distractions will help you maintain focus on your teacher and class material.

    • 3

Get sufficient sleep. Taking care of yourself is essential for maintaining focus and mental energy. If you are out late before class, fatigue will make it all the more difficult to pay attention and understand. Go to bed early when you have morning classes and get extra sleep when you cram for study sessions.

    • 4

Participate by asking and answering questions. It is difficult not to pay attention when you are having a discussion. When your teacher asks the class for an answer, put your hand up and say what you think. When you are not sure about something, ask your teacher to explain. Participate in class discussions instead of letting your thoughts drift away. Engaging and interacting with your teacher and fellow classmates will help you maintain focus and prevent you from daydreaming.

Take notes. Writing down information not only helps you remember, but also forces you to pay attention. Use a traditional pen and paper to avoid being distracted by email, instant messaging and websites on your laptop. Taking notes will force you to engage your brain.
