How to Drop a Class

Dropping, or withdrawing, from a college class is not always a big deal. However, it can show up on your transcript as a withdraw and it may set back your graduation timeline, depending on your situation. There are many good reasons, though, for dropping a class, including an illness, difficult family situation or you're likely to get a failing grade which can affect your GPA.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your college's handbook, website or registrar guide to look to see if a dropped class appears on your transcript as withdraw or if it's too late. Depending on the college, you may have two to four weeks after classes start to drop a class before it shows up on your transcript, and you may or may not get a full or partial refund. Knowing the different drop deadlines may influence your decision.

Go to the registration website or call the registration number, which varies among colleges. At some colleges, you can go to the registrar's office and fill out a form to drop a class.

    • 3

Select the class you want to drop following the prompts online or on the phone. At the registrar's office, fill out the correct form -- which may be available to print online -- and include all the pertinent information including your student ID, course number of the class you want to drop and signature. Give it to the appropriate person and note that a photo or student ID is most likely necessary. You may be able to fax or mail this form to the registrar's office instead, if desired.
