Request a "fee appeal" form from your school's registrar. Not all schools have this option. Call your registrar's office after locating the phone number on your school's website. Ask the staff member if the office offers "fee appeal" forms. If so, pick up the form. Fill out and turn in the form according to the instructions listed on the document. Be sure to include a legitimate reason for missing the deadline, such as a medical emergency.
Prepare a letter that explains why you did not drop your class before the final drop deadline. This option is useful if the school does not offer official appeal forms. You must include a legitimate reason for doing so. For example, you may have intended to drop the class before the deadline, but a family emergency prevented you from doing so. You must include in the letter your intention of dropping the class before the deadline, or the registrar may argue that you should have done so before the unfortunate event occurred.
Attach supporting documentation to your letter. For example, include a letter from your doctor stating that a medical issue had to be addressed on the specific date that you mentioned in your letter. Or, if you had to leave for a family emergency, include a brief signed statement from a family member verifying your story.
Place the letter and supporting document(s) in an envelope and address it to your school's registrar. The registrar is the official responsible for the course enrollment and drop processes. (The official may differ at your school. For example, you may have to address the letter to your college counselor or financial aid office.) Look up the office address and room for the appropriate official on your school's website.
Deliver the letter to the appropriate official during the office hours listed on the school's website. Request that the fee be removed from your account and explain the circumstances surrounding your request. Give the letter to the official to help prove your case.
Check your student account online (or at the financial aid office) after a few days to make sure that the fee was removed from your account. If not, follow up with the person who agreed to your request to get it removed, if this was the case.
