How to Transfer Credit Counted in GPA

Virtually all colleges and universities accept transfer students, and the process of transferring credits is very straightforward. Generally, only credits from accredited colleges or universities will be accepted, and sealed transcripts will be required. Your coursework will be evaluated by an admissions counselor. Acceptance of transfer credits varies from school to school, with some schools taking a liberal approach to accepting lots of transfer credits, and others being more stringent.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply to the college or university of your choice as a transfer student by requesting the proper forms from the office of admissions or downloading them from the website.

    • 2

Request official transcripts from previous colleges or universities you have attended by contacting the school's registrar's office. Pay any fee required and have sealed transcripts sent to you or the school you intend to transfer to. If the transcripts are sent to you, hand-deliver or mail them, with the seal intact, to your prospective new school.

    • 3

Wait while your request to be admitted as a transfer student is evaluated. The school will notify you of its decision within several weeks. At that time, it will tell you how many of your transfer credits -- if not all -- were accepted, along with your new GPA. The notification may come by standard mail, or you may be emailed with instructions on how to login to the university's website and access it.
