How to See if Credits Can Transfer to a College

With the growth of alternative methods of education, a greater number of people have credits earned from community colleges, two-year programs, or online courses. These credits can generally be transferred to major universities for credit towards a degree. However, there are restrictions, depending on the university, on what you can transfer and what you can use the credit for.

Instructions

    • 1

Save all of your course materials, all of your exams, and obtain an official copy of your transcripts. You will most likely need to present these materials in order to get credit for the course(s) at another institution.

    • 2

Go online and find the college's transfer of credit web page. You might be able to search for accepted courses on the site, especially if your credits are from a popular institution. Many larger colleges and universities have well-developed websites that can provide you with all the necessary information online. If not, you will need to contact the institution directly.

    • 3

Look up the college's phone number and see if they have an office for credit transfer. Many colleges have a transfer of credit adviser in each department. If this is the case, call the department office for your major and ask to speak to this person. If you are serious about attending the institution, you may need to meet in person or give a detailed description over the phone. If your courses are from a large or well-known institution, the adviser will probably already know whether the credits will transfer or not.

    • 4

Provide a written statement or prepare an oral statement. This is referred to as "petitioning" for credit. This petition must present the case for why your credits should be accepted. Try to make up for for any deficiencies in the course, such as a limited number of credit hours or class time, or very little written work. Present this statement to the transfer of credit adviser for your area of interest.

    • 5

Give the department or college all the necessary documents, including your statement. They will deliberate over whether you will get credit for the course.
