How to Transfer a College GPA

Three types of cumulative GPAs exist: overall GPA, the GPA for every course that transfers to your new college in addition to the grades you get there; major GPA, the GPA you have accumulated in your major classes; and institutional GPA, your overall GPA for the institution from which you get your degree (not including any previous grades, even if all of your classes transferred to your new school). Not all colleges use each GPA, so it is a possibility that your previous GPA, no matter how good, may not factor into your final collegiate GPA.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of colleges that you would like to transfer to and apply to these schools. Most colleges have specific entry forms for transfer students.

    • 2

Search through the websites of the colleges that you want to transfer to for information on what they do with your previous GPA. Sometimes this information can be difficult to find or worded in such a way that it is difficult to understand.

    • 3

Visit any schools you want to transfer to if at all possible. Make an appointment to talk to a guidance or admissions counselor and ask them what happens with your GPA when you transfer. If a college accepts you and uses overall GPA, it will take that information from your transcript and you generally need not do anything else.
