Music Business Degree Programs

Aside from performers, many professionals in the music industry work on the business side of profession, managing entertainers' careers, working as producers or executives or even working on the technology side of the industry. Music business degree programs can be found at several prominent colleges and universities.
  1. University of Miami

    • The University of Miami offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the music business industry. The curriculum for both programs were developed with a career-oriented focus, giving students the opportunity to gain practical experience in the field prior to graduation. The school operates a student operated record label to provide this experience. At the undergraduate level, the university offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Business and Entertainment Industries. The curriculum requires a combination of business and music courses. Courses include Music Copyright and Publishing, Computers in the Music Industry, Introduction to Business Law and Record Industry Operations.

      At the graduate level, the school offers the Master of Music degree. The graduate degree program requires six credit hours in music industry, nine hours in music and an additional 12 credit hours in business courses.

    New York University

    • New York University offers music industry programs through its Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. Recognizing that the music industry constantly changes, the program emphasizes the basic structure of the industry, the reasons why this structure often changes and interpretation and analysis of that change. Courses include Economic and Legal Setting of the Music Industry, Business Structure of the Music Industry and Music Publishing.

      NYU also offers a Master of Music degree, requiring the completion of 54 credit hours. Of these, 27 credit hours consist of music business and foundational courses. Courses include Managing the Performing Artist, Law and the Music Industry, Principles and Practice in the Music Industry and Strategic Marketing in the Music Industry.

    Globe University/Minnesota School of Business

    • Globe University/Minnesota School of Business offers an associate degree program in the music business industry. Program instructors are professionals in the music industry rather than professors. The associate degree program requires students to complete courses in audio production, marketing and sales, and knowledge of the music industry. Courses include Entertainment Networking and Self Promotion, Copyright and Music Publishing and Artist Management and Live Performance.

      Globe University and MSB also offer a Bachelor's in Business Management with a focus in the music business and a Bachelor's in Media Business degree as well. The business management degree requires two years of full-time study in business management and two years of studies in music industry studies. The media business degree requires that students have an associate degree in a related field.
